2018 Design Awards + Education Event

On Friday, 21 September 2018 at Charter Hall in Downtown Roanoke, the Design Awards + Education Event will bring together the greater AIA Blue Ridge community for a day of Continuing Education, capped off in the evening by the 2018 Design + Honor Awards ceremony recognizing design excellence from our region and beyond. The awards gala will feature guest speaker and 2018 design awards jury chair, David Jameson, FAIA.

David’s work has been recognized nationally and internationally with over 175 design awards and featured in over 200 design publications including Architectural Record, Abitare, Architecture, Architectural Digest, and Architectural Review. London based Wallpaper magazine recognized the firm in 2011 as one of four US based firms to follow in its Fabulous 40 issue and Architectural Digest named David as the youngest member of their AD100 roster, a listing of the top 100 architects and designer’s worldwide. In 2012 the Wall Street Journal included the studio in their folio of the ten best residential architects in the US.

EDUCATION EVENT // 8am – 4pm, Charter Hall

Organized around the theme of Assembly, this year’s Education Event will feature discussions and presentations covering a wide spectrum of emergent issues in the realms of Project, Practice, and Profession. During lunch (included in the ticket price) attendees will have the opportunity to engage with our Friends of the Blue Ridge vendor sponsors.

8:30 AM – Emerging Horizons in Creative Practice (1 HSW)

  • Presenter: Dr. Richard Blythe, Intl. Assoc. AIA // Dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies, Virginia Tech

Richard Blythe, Dean and Professor at Virginia Tech, will discuss emerging models of practice and share new intersections between the academy and profession that are poised to reshape the landscape of creative practice

9:25 AM – Merging BIM and Virtual Reality (1 HSW)

  • Presenter: JW Blanchard, AIA // Architect, AECOM

An introduction to the integration of virtual reality into the BIM environment, with a focus on use of this emerging technology as a tool for design and stakeholder engagement.


10:20 AM – New Directions in Mass Timber Construction (1 HSW)

  • Presenter: Edward Becker, Intl. Assoc. AIA // Assistant Professor of Architecture, Virginia Tech

An overview of the mass timber landscape in Northern Europe as well as a current look at this emerging building material’s benefits and the situation in the US regarding application, uptake, limitations to use, code challenges, and architectural possibilities.

A moderated panel discussion on emerging trends, challenges, and opportunities in the A/E/C industry featuring diverse perspectives from inside and outside the profession.

1:20 PM – 2015 Virginia Construction Code Teaser (1 HSW)

  • Presenter: Rick Hinson, PE, CBO // ECS

A high-level overview of changes and updates in the new 2015 Virginia Construction Code set for implementation beginning in September, 2018.

2:15 PM – Roanoke Comprehensive Plan Update and Missing Middle Housing (1 HSW)

  • Presenters: Bob Cowell // City Manager, City of Roanoke; Chris Chittum // Director of Planning, City of Roanoke; Katharine Gray // Architect, Land Use & Urban Design Planner, City of Roanoke

The Roanoke Comprehensive Plan is in the process of being created. As the community grows, the best ways to accommodate additional population are being explored. Join us in an interactive event to explore solutions around the missing middle housing types in our community and help create the policies to guide development for the next 20 years.


  • Presenters: Danny MacNelly // Partners, ARCHITECTUREFIRM

The work of ARCHITECTUREFIRM – based in Richmond, VA with an outpost in NYC – has garnered regional, national, and international acclaim for its sensitivity to place, conceptual clarity, and attention to detail. Architects Katie and Danny MacNelly will share stories of their recent and ongoing projects and an inside look into the workings of their emerging practice.

DESIGN + HONOR AWARDS GALA // 6pm – 8pm, Charter Hall

In addition to dinner and drinks (included in the full day or evening ticket price), the evening will feature a short presentation by guest speaker and 2018 awards jury chair, David Jameson, FAIA.
